Biographical details

Sheila has been associated with CES since the late 1980s, working closely on a number of research projects with Cathy Howieson over this time. She has been more formally linked to the Centre since October 2009 when she took early retirement from the University of Strathclyde to start her own consultancy in education, guidance and professional training. At Strathclyde she was Co-Director of the Centre for Studies in Enterprise, Career Development and Work (Enterprising Careers), Course Director of the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/Masters in Career Guidance and Development and Reader in the Faculty of Education.

 

Main areas of work

Sheila’s specialist interests have been in: career guidance and development; the role of parents and families in career development; transitions from school to work; the provision of guidance and support to young people and adults with regard to learning, work and career development; education industry links; enterprising teaching and learning; and employability. While the majority of her work has been based in Scotland, she has also completed comparative studies within the countries of the British Isles and has worked in Thailand, the UAE and China with respect to career guidance and the development of employability, enterprise and career management skills.
